Yay for solid-state electronics!

Fri 24.Feb.2006

I did laundry on Sunday, as I sometimes do. Usually I empty the pockets of garments as I remove them, so I don't usually check. When I opened the washer on this particular Sunday, however, my 256MB flash drive was sitting there weeping at me. There was actually moisture coming from the device. I wept too.

I didn't weep for long, because I have a short attention span. Later I wanted to use a program I had stored on the flash drive. I plugged it in, and to my surprise, it worked! All my files and whatnot are still there. It also smells April Fresh™, which may be even better.

Ok, I lied (and other stuff)

Tue 31.Jan.2006

Here we are in the crappy mid-morning part of the third week of classes, and I still haven't put a schedule in your hot little hands. Tough. I don't feel like doing it right now.

Ever have one of those classes that just goes on forever, and you look at your watch and see that it's only halfway over? Organic is not one of those classes. When I look at my watch the class isn't halfway over, it's over by half an hour. One hour of organic chemistry makes my brain shut off, which makes the scheduled class time 15 minues too long to begin with. I have no idea what posesses my professor to think that an extra 30 minutes might help.

So my phone battery is like Skittles™ now. It's five (differently colored but similar tasting) different flavors of messed up. For example, I just turned it back on. Five minutes ago it said it was holding full charge. I bet you could guess what it's telling me now. Yup, full charge. God I hate technology.

Tonight I'm gonna make some onigiri. For those of you who aren't gonna click the link, it's a neat little japanese food where you take a ball of sushi rice, fill it with something yummy (in my case canned salmon [with the little vertebra and everything]) and wrap it in nori (dried seaweed). Then you put it in your mouth and masticate. Then you go get yourself a fresh pair of shorts because it is just that good.

Coretta Scott King passed away today. She was an active and influential civil rights supporter, and she will be dearly missed. Ironically, Samuel Alito was confirmed today as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. His decisions, while they seem rational at first glance, have a decided lean towards the denial of civil liberties. I'm upset. This Bush character has put way too many people on the bench for my taste. Today is a dark day indeed for civil rights. That's why it's more important than ever to be socially and politically active. Nobody is going to affect any change by hibernating until the next election. There's work to be done now

I hopped around a lot tonight. I had stuff to talk about. *shrugs*

100 Things

Thu 12.Jan.2006
I hopped on a little bandwagon and wrote a list of 100 things about me. Do a google on "100 things" and you'll see the root of the whole thing. I actually wrote it quite a while ago, but I haven't gotten around to writing about it yet. I gotta reorganize the list just a tiny bit, but mostly it is what it is. (more...)

Drag Show

Mon 04.Jul.2005

Until Thursday night, I had never been to a drag show or a gay bar. Now I have!

My friend Katie lives about an hour from me, near Rochester. She went on and on to me about this club she liked there called Muther's when we were at school. She told me about drag shows that she's been to there. I told her that I'd go at some point, but I was in no rush. I knew Steve didn't really like clubs, so I wasn't going to press the matter with him.

About 3 weeks ago I got a call from Amber. She asked me if I wanted to go to a drag show with her. Now I had never been to one, but I had been meaning to for some time. I told Steve, and while he wasn't thrilled, he agreed. I had glee. Next, Amber tells me that it's at Muther's, the club that Katie kept harassing me about. I asked if we'd see Katie there. As it turned out, Katie was making her drag debut!

We arrived early, so there was nobody there. I got the marker hand, along with one of Amber's friends, while Amber and Steve got the alcoholic wristbands. Amber's not of age, but she looks remarkably like her older sister when she smiles, so she got by. Around 11, the first performers came out. The first couple acts were drag kings (it's like drag queens, only reversed) and I was pretty much unimpressed. No offense ladies (or gentlemen, if you prefer) but I've seen manlier women around campus. The queens were much better performers - pun intended - but I was mostly not into the music. Then Katie came out. She was actually one of the best acts out there, no lie. I don't like her well enough to lie about something like that. I was surprised. Of course, I'm still not a fan of the music, but she did it well, and with her friend Eric, it was perfect.

The second act was much better for kings and queens alike. I think the crowd was a lot more responsive, or at least a lot more drunk. The music didn't improve by much, but there were a couple classics thrown in, including Cake's cover or the classic "I Will Survive". Amber was drinking slowly but steadily, and by the end of the night we had one rather spirited dance before we called it a night. I drove home.

I think fun was had by all, even though Steve was getting a little tired by the second show. On the way back, Amber and I decided that we should occasionally go back. Hell, neither of us have Friday classes next semester.

MIT Weblog Survey

Free CameronI'm a sucker for filling out forms. I don't know what it is, but it has always been there. My mom is a nurse, and when I was younger I'd have her bring old forms home just so I could fill them out. Naturally, I was thrilled to learn that my propensity for form-filling could actually help somebody with his doctoral thesis.

Pimp Hat

Pimp Hat

Pimp Hat,
by horsedreamer.

Mom is pretty pimpin in the pimp hat. Actually, this was apparently Papi's hat, and is missing a feather. It's amazing the things you'll run across when you're trying to clean up a little bit.

The blue thing in her ear is the earpiece for my phone. She's harassing Steve about painting. We're going to be doing some painting in a couple of days. I just changed the lightbulb in here to a sunlight florescent, so between that and the new color, it should really brighten things up in here, even though the color is a tad darker, and blue. It feels clean though.

Doesn't momz0r have a pretty smile? I think she does.

Poppin’ Straws and Takin’ Names

Wed 08.Jun.2005

There's something to be said for growing up in small towns. Where else can you spend 45 minutes popping straws in a Tim Horton's/Wendy's parking lot and claim it was the most interesting thing there was to do?

I've been hanging out with Tracy (who incidentally hasn't touched her site in ages) quite a bit lately. We spend much time contemplating how little there is to do in the Finger Lakes for people who are Broke As Hellâ„¢. These are some of the few times that I regret being unemployed. The other times are when I am on my computer and want it to be faster, or when I want to buy something, or when I'm low on gas, or when I'm hungry, or in other situations where it would do well to have money. In retrospect, there are more than a few times that I regret being unemployed. I do not regret it, however, between the hours of 6 and 11 in the morning, when I am sleeping.
