I have a rather large music collection. Among it, there are songs which will infallibly remind me of a particular time when I was listening to them. For example, Rockin' the Suburbs always reminds me of playing Chrono Trigger on an SNES emulator on the computer, in the living room, with mom asleep on the couch, going through the first time-travel of the game. The lamp in the corner was on but it's not very bright, and it gives everything sort of a yellow cast. The peanut butter was sitting on the trunk that mom used as a coffee table (she has a different one now, still a trunk) the front of the label faced toward the dining room. The doors to the dining room were just a couple inches open. They stuck now and again, being rather old pocket doors, and somebody was lazy.

Not all of the songs with memories are that precise, and not all of them correspond exactly with the time that I was listening to them. Kiss from a Rose reminds me of watching Interview with a Vampire and several episodes of Angelic Layer with Jeff on his laptop in a tent at Tracy's house. If You Could Only See reminds me of a very close friend I had, the first girl I kissed, and the extreme confusion I experienced regarding how I felt about her, how she might have felt about me, and all these sort of awkward teenager things. It's more than a recollection though. I actually feel that way. For this reason, I don't listen to that song very often.

The point of relating this experience is to ask a question. Does anyone else experience any of this? For a while I assumed that everyone had it to a greater or lesser degree, but I come to find out that "lesser" is much more common. Do you have any sensory triggers that automatically remind you of certain situations?

I just got back from the best Wal*Mart run ever. The original plan had been that Alex and I would run out, grab something fast, and go back to our respective residences. Well, McDonald's was the only thing open, but they were doing a "system change-over" or something, so they couldn't give us any food. I decided that Christiansburg must have something open, so we went.

Not much was open in Christiansburg. Walgreen's was open, so we stopped there on Alex's suggestion. At Walgreen's we decided that cereal was a good idea, but buying cereal at a drugstore is silly. We went over to Wal*Mart next door and bought cereal, and I got milk, and two bowls and some spoons. On the way home I ate a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (while I was driving). It was delicious. This all occurred between 3:30 and 4:30 in the morning.

The moral of the story? It's hard to drink milk out of a cereal bowl while you're driving.

I'm too lazy to write an actual post, but there are a couple of news items I'd like to point out.

Grape Juice is Great Juice - I've been saying this all along! Grape juice is the best juice in the world, but cranberry is a close second. Apple juice is just gross, but cider is good. The article is actually about antioxidants, though. Quoth British researcher Alan Crozier, "Purple grape juice made with Concord grapes contains the highest and broadest range of ployphenols as well as having the highest antioxidant capacity. Other high-ranking produces include cloudy apple juice and cranberry juice drink."

Ballmer says Google is insane - So is that what he calls his reflection? I've always just addressed myself as "self." I'd say something like "It'll be smooth sailing from here, Self." Ballmer, scary-looking CEO of Microsoft and really crazy dude, is all up in arms over Google (again) over their development plans for the new Docs & Spreadsheets product, among other things. That man is going to have a heart attack, mark my words.

The Problem, in A Fundamental Nutshell: 'Is Your Baby Gay?' - I tried to think of something for this one, but Southern Baptists just aren't funny. Mohler, "one of the leading voices of the... Southern Baptist Convention," asked on his blog what Christians would do if there was testing available to detect imminent homosexuality in fetuses and a hormone patch that could prevent it. It's sort of an interesting question, after you get past the disgusting bigotry of the way it's asked.

By the by, the new dog is named Abigail, and she was spayed on Friday. I haven't gotten any pictures because the light has sucked for the past couple of days.

I'm at home for the week, currently chilling in the basement and catching some wireless leeching love courtesy of Frontier DSL. I thought I would be SOL for internet connection, but the modem they use also includes a four-port wireless router. Awesome!

I'll be enjoying Thanksgiving, as I usually do, with my extended family on my mother's side. Steve will be joining me in a couple of days. I really love the closeness of our family, I think it has had a big impact on me. I sometimes forget that not everyone has this kind of relationship with their family. I really do feel badly for them, it's a wonderful thing to have. If you can't be with your family, give them a ring and say hello. Let them know you care.

Now that I've been all sentimental, I'll give you the haps. Days Inn apparently has free wireless internet for guests, so if you're ever in a pinch for internet access, you can always park in their lot. I drove ten hours home from Blacksburg, with only a quick stop in Lebanon, PA for gas, Wendy's and email. Just the essentials, folks.

I'll be heading home on Saturday, giving me time to situate myself at home before class gets started on Monday. Painters are supposed to be in this week to paint one wall of my room which is suffering from water damage from the apartment above. Because of this, my furniture is all moved away from that wall and I'm entirely disorganized. I was getting sick of looking at the water spot on my wall, though.

I also found an mp3 of Killer Tofu by The Beets. For the uninitiated, The Beets are a fictional cartoon band from the Nickelodeon, and later Disney, show Doug.

It seems that everything is so "Web 2.0" these days, with all their AJAX thingamabobs that update your information five seconds before you enter it, and custom switching stylesheets based on the weather in Brisbane. I didn't even have any shiny or glassy starburst graphics... until now!

Unfortunately, my content just isn't very Web 2.0, nor is the site in general. That's why I was forced to create my very own starbursts that didn't have any new-fangled technological references.

If you ever get ice cream from one of those vending machines, and you get an Edy's strawberry popsicle, be careful. They're really cold! I got my lips stuck to it! You know on that movie you'll shoot your eye out where Ralphie gets his tongue stuck to the pole? It was just like that, except it's a popsicle. I was going to go back into the store to get a cup of water, but I think they would've laughed at me.

No, Mom, they would've been laughing with you.

There were crews with mowers, leaf blowers, and a couple of massive trucks with three foot wide hoses attached. I could see the plumes of leaf dust and fungal spores rising off the vacuum truck.

Why on earth would they do that? I understand the need to remove a portion of the leaf litter, or at least get it broken down. It keeps the grass prettier. Why on earth would they have to put that much dust and allergens in the air in the process? There has got to be a better way.
