Sosua, in a nutshell

21 December, 23:35 local

It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here for nearly a week. The trouble with vacation is that by the time you’re settling in, it’s time to leave again. That, and the money. We did our fifth (of six) dive today. We were planning on finishing today, but they scheduled a snorkel cruise for the afternoon.

I’m getting sort of sick of losing power all the time. Apparently the power plant doesn’t have the capacity to keep Sosua running all the time, and the generator at the hotel doesn’t work. There is a battery backup that will run lights for a few hours, but we’re stuck for hot water or refrigeration. It was quaint and liberating at first, but seriously, I’m not camping here. I’ve got two laptop batteries and I charge them while I can. I suppose that a working internet connection would probably be too much to ask for at this point.

My right eye is bothering me. It feels sort of like a black eye crossed with a sinus headache. I can still see perfectly but I feel this strange pressure all the time, and pain if I rub it. I can’t decide if it’s a bug bite or if I got something oceanic in it, or maybe I got a bug in it.

There are things from the past two days that I still haven’t written about, simply because I’ve been too tired or haven’t had electricity. I’ve managed to put down some notes that I can flesh out later, but I just don’t have the energy right now. Diving is exhausting, even when it’s not with Steven.
