I get upset.

Thu 19.Oct.2006

There are reasons that I get upset sometimes. For example:

And tomorrow on the Drillfield from 9-5 there will be some awesome festivities!!

  • Shirts for sale!
  • Vagina pops for sale!
  • Wage gap bake sale (.75 for women, 1.00 for men) OH SNAP!
  • Positive v. negative body image displays!

I guess I can't complain though, I did see it on lj

Why there are no pictures of me.

I sometimes wonder how I get myself into these situations.

Vacuuming Leaves

Sun 15.Oct.2006

There was a massive effort on Friday to remove all the leaf litter from campus. There were crews with mowers, leaf blowers, and a couple of massive trucks with three foot wide hoses attached. I could see the plumes of leaf dust and fungal spores rising off the vacuum truck.

Why on earth would they do that? I understand the need to remove a portion of the leaf litter, or at least get it broken down. It keeps the grass prettier. Why on earth would they have to put that much dust and allergens in the air in the process? There has got to be a better way.

SPF: Fall

Thu 12.Oct.2006

I was worried for a bit that I wouldn't get to participate in this week's Stuff Portrait Friday. Kristine was a little late getting the challenge up, and with my hit-or-miss performance since I started, the odds looked stacked against me. Fortunately this week's SPF is about my favorite time of year: Fall.

The change of seasons

260

I know this might seem like a huge cop-out, but I actually wasn't trying to capture the color change of the leaves. I was trying to find a decent way to photographically portray the wind. When the wind gusts it blows leaves off, but it's sort of hard to predict. For me, the wind has always been a big part of fall. Fall is a season of change, and wind is the weather of change. Nobody talks about "the flurries of change" or "the patchy fog clearing in the late morning of change."

The beauty of home

I'll get it up eventually.

Once more I dig into the Photo Folder of Doom™ to bring you pictures of a waterfall! This is a short hike from my home. I love all the little waterways that run around my area. I sort of miss it. It's been a while since I've had a chance to get out and enjoy the nature back home.

My favorite part of the weather change

264

My favorite part about the weather cooling down is that I get to wear my sweaters. I really do like my sweaters, and I don't get nearly enough opportunity to wear them. I just prefer warm winter clothes in general. They make me feel all soft and snuggly and comfy.

So that's my fall in a nutshell. Walnut, if you want to get specific about it. I don't think they get ripe enough for human consumption though. The squirrels usually get them first.

Did you play?

Tasty Seduction

Thu 12.Oct.2006

"Dr. Wansink, who holds a doctorate in marketing from Stanford University and directs the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, probably knows more about why we put things in our mouths than anybody else." (NYT)

Normally this is the sort of thing that'd end up in the lateral tally (that's sidelog, for those not keeping track), but I felt that that quote needed to appear in a prominent sort of way. It's actually referring to food and how people think about food, but I had a little MiG (that's Mind in Gutter) moment. I mean, think of the possibilities. Wait, isn't that a food slogan?

Anyhow, you can check out the article for yourself.

National Coming Out Day

Wed 11.Oct.2006

It's 11:10 on 11 October 2006, National Coming Out Day. I felt like I should say something about it.

I've been out for a good number of years now. It was Friday 13 December 2002. That's a long story for another day. I was lucky though. Even though I come from a relatively conservative area in upstate New York, I didn't get much trouble about it. My family was, for the most part, very accepting. I don't know how people, especially young people, deal with it when their friends or family reject them for their sexuality. I wish there was something I could do for them. In fact if you're in that situation, contact me, I want to help if I can.

The most important thing for me about coming out is that it makes people think. It's one thing to hate "gay people" (or other less tasteful terms) and entirely another to hate a person you've known for years. A lot of people that have a problem with homsexuals actually are afraid of the Big Bad HomoMonster™. Come out. Come out as an ally. Be the person that destroys the Big Bad HomoMonster™, even if it's just for your immediate family and friends.
